Darren McGavin played Carl Kolchak, a bloodhound reporter with a nose for news. One of the best examples I can site from memory is perhaps my favorite McGavin vehicle: Kolchak: The Night Stalker.. I remember seeing him on TV starting in the 60s. Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole (Oct 05, 1961 - Dec 16, 1961) Starring: Darren McGavin [1st Lieutenant Stanley Poole] Play Original. It was a great, great week. Certainly Kolchak is one of the three or four most memorable personalities in the history of television. Darren was great! Yet, here he was, fighting monsters on the streets and in City Hall and he was winning. The actor, who passed away in February 2006 at the age of 83, had four children.
